Hong Kong continually surprises its diners with new and trendy restaurants, and FUMI, an achingly stylish Japanese restaurant and bar serving everything from omakase dinners and kaiseki meals to à-la-carte dishes and set lunches, is no exception.

FUMI Hong Kong

Housed in California Tower in LKF, FUMI is an elegant space filled with Japanese-inspired art, furniture and tableware. The restaurant team make it their mission to educate diners about Japanese heritage by presenting cultural menus to coincide with Japanese festivals and hosting traditional dance performances, calligraphy demonstrations and talks about the country’s food culture.

This holiday season, FUMI is serving up a New Year’s Eve menu ($688/person) using seasonal ingredients, designed by Executive Chef Imai Masakazu. This menu can be paired with generous glasses of sake, should you prefer a boozy holiday meal.

Hokkaido salad

The menu starts with the Hokkaido salad of snow crab, scallop, botan ebi shrimp, sweet shrimp and salmon roe – a delightful melange of fresh flavours.

Sashimi

Sashimi follows, with toro (tuna), red bream, Hokkaido octopus and yellowtail to pamper your taste buds.

Grilled Nanbu chicken

The grilled Nanbu chicken, with homemade teriyaki sauce in “Chikuzen”style, is grilled with salt to bring out the delicious flavour of the fowl. This dish was simple yet satisfying.

Kyoto-style oden

The Kyoto-style oden, meant to be shared, is a comforting winter dish that definitely hit the spot. Chef Masakazu uses red konnyaku (konjac) in the oden to symbolise the holiday season.

The dessert is adorably served in the shape of a Christmas tree. We didn’t realise that it’s meant to be shared between two, and it got slightly messy when we tried to disassemble all the creamy goodness.
