Discover South Africa is a month-long annual campaign organised by Wines of South Africa (WOSA) to bring South African hospitality to Hong Kong. This year is particularly special because the country is celebrating both 360 years of winemaking history and 25 years of democracy.

WOSA lined up a series of activities to excite the palates of Hong Kong’s wine and food lovers.

Two weeks prior to the campaign, a few lucky Foodie Clubbers got a preview of what the nation has to offer at the South African Wine Safari by restaurant-hopping in style to sample different cuisines paired with equally delicious South African wines.

The highlight was the whirlwind visit by renowned South African chef Chantel Dartnall from Restaurant Mosaic at the Orient in Pretoria, South Africa, who, together with SKYE’s kitchen team from The Park Lane Hong Kong, presented her signature botanical cuisine paired with some of the finest South African wines to some 300 guests.

Chef Dartnall was voted the Best Lady Chef in the World 2017, and her restaurant has just been nominated for LA LISTE’s Top 200 2019. Those who tried her dishes were bowled over by the chef’s finesse.

On 12 April, wine lovers gathered at the Discover South Africa annual tasting where they tasted over 200 wines, from MCC (sparkling wine in South Africa) to sweet wine, across different regions including classic Stellenbosch and Constantia, Mediterranean-climate Swartland and cool-climate Hemel-en-Aarde. The flagship grape varieties – Chenin Blanc and Pinotage – were the most sought after. Guests were particularly impressed by the line-up of Veritas Awards Double Gold wine, most of which are not yet available in Hong Kong. Throughout the entire month of April, wine lovers and foodies were busy visiting participating restaurants and outlets to discover and enjoy the diversity of food-friendly South African wine paired with dishes from East to West and from casual eats to fine dining. If you missed out this year, make sure to join us next year.
