Touting itself as a discreet gentlemen’s haven (but perfect for gentlewomen as well), initimate Bar De Luxe is quiet during most evenings, with an old-fashioned charm, candlelight and Kelly green walls that scream luxury. Its floor-to-ceiling windows complement the dark interior, offering fabulous views of Central and stunning sunsets.
Bar De Luxe was developed by Ueno Hidetsugu, the legendary bartender behind Bar High Five in Tokyo, bringing a unique flair from a partnership with luxury menswear boutique Attire House and living up to Hidetsugu’s exquisite cocktails.
Bar De Luxe’s newest menu pays homage to late summer, with signatures easing us into autumn created by the knowledgeable staff under Ivin Hui, the senior bartender, and master mixologist Masayuki Uchida.
Taking a seat at one of the the comfy couches, four drinks were prepared for us during the evening, and we clinked our glasses to celebrate late summer, starting with the Bellini ($218). Extremely smooth and refreshing, the delicate Japanese peach used highlights the notes of rose from the Moët & Chandon bubbly. Almost too easy to drink, this seasonal libation is a masterclass of Bar De Luxe’s mixology, emulating femininity and sophistication.
For another cocktail with a citrusy aroma that’s on the refreshing side, Nostalgia ($168) has hints of bergamot and green tea. Tangerine fills the nose, and the first few sips are clean and slightly sweet. A perfect drink to sip after a long day at work!
For peaty drinks to ease us into autumn, signatures Cigarette ($178) and the Hidden Gem ($168) are complex, each containing a whisky-based element. Cigarette mixes Kilchoman Machir Bay single-malt Scotch whisky with Antica sweet vermouth, The Bitter Truth E**X**R herbal liqueur and homemade roasted tea bitters. With a powerful, smoky ending, this drink makes for an elegant nightcap.
Beautifully festive with its red hue, Hidden Gem contains Japanese Taketsuru whisky, yomogi herbal liqueur and Amaro Averna. This drink is simple and smooth, reminding me of a negroni. Sweet caramel notes flow throughout, with hints of earthy rosemary and thyme and citrus.
Verdict
This legendary bar is an institution for expertly crafted cocktails. I recommend coming to Bar De Luxe as a quieter place to catch up, for anybody who appreciates luxury mixology. These incredible cocktails are a perfect transition into autumn.
