Fortunately, we were the lucky recipients of a taste of his new 22 Ships dishes.
Iberico pork & foie gras burger with avocado
The dishes: Very surprisingly our favourite dish was the first to arrive, and it was just vegetables, but man was it delicious. Atherton’s cauliflower, mushroom, parsley and walnuts made a dish we would have never thought to order but it was a true triumph of a recipe. We tried the meaty gambas, simply done in chilli and garlic and the moreish calamari served with a smoked paprika aioli. The squid and bass slider was nice enough but as far as fish goes, the sardines were gorgeous as was the tuna with shallots and capers. We would order the Iberico pork sliders every time with their avocado accompaniment, and we enjoyed the pork belly topped with squid and chickpeas. The slow-cooked lamb shoulder with sweet potato and cumin might have been our next favourite dish for its rich flavour and tender meat, but the 28-day aged Australian rib eye served with salsa verde made it exceptionally hard to choose between the two. We’re actually not sure you could go very far wrong with anything you order from this new menu and it certainly made us wish for a return trip, and soon.
Cauliflower mushroom & parsley salad, walnut pesto
The finisher: Atherton’s peanut butter, condensed milk and banana ($78) will have your taste buds returning to childhood with its ooey gooey goodness.
We say: As good as ever if you fancy a float down Ship Street.
