How to create a new copyright tag[edit]

Hi, I want to create a new copyright tag which will be used with files that are work of a government. Various types of governments, like national government, provincial government or local government, allow others to upload their contents under the conditions:- 1) proper attribution and 2) use in non objectionable and respectful manner. Copyright tags for the Governmental works of individual governments exists, like Template:GODL-India for Government of India, Template:PD-USGov for Government of United States. As it is not possible to create copyright tag for every single government, I think a general copyright tag should be created. So can you share the procedures required? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ku423winz1 (talk • contribs) 11:27, 15 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Ku423winz1: Hi, and welcome. We have tags for many governments, see COM:CRT. We already have {{Attribution}} (or any of the nine other redirects for {{Attribution only license}}). "use in non objectionable and respectful manner" is a non-copyright restriction we don't concern ourselves with. Please see COM:SIGN.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 11:45, 15 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Ku423winz1: Actually, yes, it is possible to create a distinct copyright tag for any government that free-licenses its materials. For some governments we have more than one tag to deal with different bodies of materials that may have slightly different non-copyright restrictions (e.g. different attribution issues). - Jmabel ! talk 15:49, 15 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Jmabel: , that's why I am wanting to create it. A common copyright tag for Governmental works will be very useful. There would be a parameter which will show the government name. Can you please share me the procedures?? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ku423winz1 (talk • contribs) 14:18, 18 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Ku423winz1: just model it on an existing template for a similar case. - Jmabel ! talk 18:59, 18 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Jmabel: , thanking for helping me. I have made the copyright tag Template:Governmental work, would you see it whether or not it is perfect? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ku423winz1 (talk • contribs) 10:31, 27 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
You are setting a non-existent Category:Governmental work (and, frankly, having Commons set templates is always to be done with a lot of caution unless that is their main purpose). And I would think the issue was more something like Category:Public-domain or free-licensed governmental work.
There really ought to be a way to link a reference for that particular government offering such rights.
I still don't like this. As I wrote above, "it is possible to create a distinct copyright tag for any government that free-licenses its materials," and I still think that is a better way to go. - Jmabel ! talk 16:54, 27 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

wrong name[edit]

A file named "flag of CMPA" is not the flag of CMPA, so I requested deletion in Commons:Deletion requests/File:Flag of Communist (Maoist) Party of Afghanistan.svg one and a half months ago, but the user changed its name to "former flag of CMPA" and the problem still exists. This file is in use. There is no copyright issue. No other name was proposed. Yann (talk) 18:47, 17 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
At the risk of possibly stating the "bleeding obvious", it seems to me that the pertinent question is whether this image does or does not depict the (or a) former flag of the Communist Party of Afghanistan. ITookSomePhotos (talk) 20:22, 17 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yes, that's the issue. But since it is in use and there is no copyright issue, it can't be deleted. Anyone is free to propose a new name, and a different description. Yann (talk) 20:28, 17 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Personally I know nothing about this, but out of idle curiosity I dragged the Wiki flag image into Google image search and it came up with a couple of hits of near-identical flag, with translation of the bottom line of script as "Communist (Maoist) Party of Afghanistan", BUT with a star instead of the hammer and sickle; see http://moufawad-paul.blogspot.com/2012/11/the-communist-maoist-party-of.html and https://www.redspark.nu/en/tag/shola-jawid/. ITookSomePhotos (talk) 00:51, 18 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
There is no doubt that it can't be the flag (or former flag) of the party. I think you don't need waste time on confirming it. I have explanated it in detail. Fire-and-Ice (talk) 17:11, 18 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
If you are certain that it is not as described, and no one knows that it is a "real" flag of any description, and it "cannot be deleted since it is in use" (even if the uses are incorrect??), then I suppose we should change the name/description to something incorporating the idea of "unidentified flag". Presumably the users of the image should also ideally be informed? ITookSomePhotos (talk) 23:21, 18 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I don't care. I just want the problem settled. Fire-and-Ice (talk) 13:51, 27 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Ray Byars[edit]

How do I put a picture on Ray Byars draft for Wikipedia? CharlemagneJane (talk) 04:59, 21 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi CharlemagneJane. Has the picture you want to use already been uploaded to English Wikipedia or Commons? Only pictures uploaded to English Wikipedia or Commons can be used on English Wikipedia pages. If the picture hasn't already been uploaded to English Wikipedia or Commons, please take a look at Commons:Licensing and Commons:Upload for more information about uploading files to Commons, and en:Wikipedia:Copyright#Guidelines for images and other media files and en:Wikipedia:Uploading images for more information on uploading files to English Wikipedia. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:06, 21 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I uploaded it but it was deleted, I think. I have no idea. CharlemagneJane (talk) 00:32, 22 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Do you remember the name of the file? Generally, when a file is tagged or otherwise nominated for deletion, a notification message is added to the uploader's user talk page. Is there such a notice on your user talk page for the file? If there is, click on the name of the file (it should be in red if it was deleted). This will take you to the file's page and near the top of the page there should be an explanation as to why the file was deleted as well as the name of the Commons administrator who deleted it. -- Marchjuly (talk) 00:46, 22 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

There was a picture that I uploaded and was approved for Tommy Byars, son of Ray Byars and the inherited owner of the Ray Byars Harley Davidson Motorcycle shop. It has been deleted from Tommy Byars and I can't find it to add it to Ray Byars' draft. Where can I find the picture so that I can use it on Ray Byars' draft. @CharlemagneJane You uploaded a number of images as user:Cjmodica. Some were deleted, some kept. You were asked to correct the descriptions (own work, date), but did not do it. Now you come back with a changed user name, upload images that had been deleted again and upload new images again with false descriptions (own work). Are you trolling? C.Suthorn (talk) 01:23, 25 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I changed my user name because I wanted to go by my nickname rather than my name. When I first uploaded my first pictures, I was very inexperienced and did not understand the language at all; therefore, I used wrong forms but after a lot of eplaining, the pictures were approved. I am still handicapped at learning Wikipedia and Wikimedia and very slow to understanding. I hope that eventually I will get the hang of it. I have only written one article ever and now I am working on my second article and I am starting to learn more, but it is still like reading Greek to me. Sorry if I offended you! I only want to do a good job and contribute historical information and I believe that I have a lot of information to give. Additionally, I don't know what trolling is but if it is a dishonest person, you are wrong. That is not me. CharlemagneJane (talk) 01:59, 25 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Copyright Law in USA[edit]

If a photographer has been deceased for 78 years, are his photos still protected under the copyright law in the USA? CharlemagneJane (talk) 18:23, 25 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@CharlemagneJane: Per COM:HIRTLE, yes if the photo was "Published with notice and the copyright was renewed", the photographer's copyright lasts 95 years from publication in "1927 through 1963". Did you really have to ask in 3 places on this page?   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 18:44, 25 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Wasn't sure if I was posting to the correct space! I really don't understand everything. I also have trouble getting around in this area but I am learning and trying to follow the rules. I read where I was supposed to add a topic so that lead to one of the posts. Then I saw where someone answered me so that lead me to the same question. Sorry, for repeating my question and I will try to be less inquizative in the future! So, what you are saying is that, if the pictures were published 94 years ago (1928) and the photographer died 78 (1944) years ago, they are still protected? My next question is will the protection be lifted on January 1, 2023? CharlemagneJane (talk) 20:12, 25 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
On January 1, 2023, works published in the U.S. in 1927 will lose copyright in the U.S. On January 1, 2024, works published in the U.S. in 1928 will lose copyright in the U.S. Etc. - Jmabel ! talk 23:46, 25 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Photos that have been reproduced and distributed in the public domain that are not licensed under the copyright law[edit]

If a photo was first published in 1928 that has never had a copyright license, is it protected under the copyright law in the USA, even if it has been reproduced and distributed in the public domain? CharlemagneJane (talk) 01:51, 26 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • Are you saying that it was published in 1928 without any claim of copyright or registration of copyright? There is no such thing as a "copyright license", so I'm not sure what you mean. Similarly "reproduced and distributed in the public domain" is more or less nonsense: please see public domain. - Jmabel ! talk 03:17, 26 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Luna the dog image[edit]

I am sorry about not being clear on the image. My question is that the photo was taken by someone I know on their phone of their pet dog. They recommended I wrote an article about the dog breed Double Doodle and then I suggested we used a photo of their dog on the article and they agreed. If you reverse image search my photo you would not get anything besides the article. They emailed me the photograph and the rest of the discussion on the photo was in real life. My question was how I could share proof that I got the image with permission. Thank you and have a good day. Tvshowoflife (talk) 05:57, 22 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi Tvshowoflife. Since you're not claiming the have taken the photo yourself, you should follow the guidance given in COM:VRT#If you are NOT the copyright holder. This might seem like overkill because the person who took the photo has already said its OK for you to use it on Wikipedia, but what you need to understand is that this type of verbal consent is insufficient for Commons. Basically, what Commons needs is for the person who took the photo to give their COM:CONSENT to allow anyone (not just you) anywhere in the world to download the photo from Commons at anytime and then reuse the photo for any purpose (not just for use on Wikipedia only). By giving their consent, the copyright holder acknowledges that others may end up reusing their photo in ways they might not approve or otherwise like; others may also use the photo for commercial reasons without having to compensate the copyright holder. It's because there's so much involved that email or some other form of written verification is required in many cases by Commons. Finally, even if you get the copyright holder to give their consent, that doesn't guarantee the photo will be used in any Wikipedia articles. How photos are used on Wikipedia isn't really a concern of Commons and sometimes there can be disagreements over whether a photo actually should be used among Wikipedia editors. If that happens with this photo, you may need to seek consensus to use the photo through discussion on the relevant article's talk page. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:10, 22 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Okay. Thank you. Tvshowoflife (talk) 06:06, 23 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Ok Marchjuly. The person who gave me permission emailed Wikimedia Commons. Can you make sure the email went through. And if the email went through can you tell me how to edit the license on to the page. Thank you and have a good day. Tvshowoflife (talk) 19:34, 24 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Tvshowoflife: If you already know what free license the person chose in the email, you can already include the corresponding license template in the licensing section of the description page. Also add the template Permission pending. It prevents the deletion of the file while the email is processed, which can take a long time or not, depending how busy the VRT team is. Note that when you add a username as a modification to an already existing message, the person you want to notify will probably not receive the notification. -- Asclepias (talk) 21:50, 24 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Asclepias and Tvshowoflife: Please be aware that per mw:Extension:Echo#Usage, one must link to another user's page and sign in the same edit (or mention in an Edit Summary) in order to effectively mention, notify, or ping them, and even then only if they have "Notify me when someone links to my user page" set (which is the default here). Pinging @Marchjuly to compensate for the above.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 06:58, 25 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Tvshowoflife: I can’t really add anything to what Asclepias posted above. You just need to be patient and let Commons VRT do its thing. If VRT was emailed, things will eventually be sorted out one way or another. I’m not a VRT member. If you have further questions about VRT, try asking at COM:VRTN. One thing about the file you uploaded is that is needs a COM:License and may end up deleted per COM:CSD#F5 if it remains unlicensed. If that happens, don’t reupload the file. A deleted file can be restored at a later date once its licensing has been sorted out. If the file is deleted before VRT verifies things, VRT will likely ask that the file be restored if the COM:CONSENT email it received turns out to be OK. — Marchjuly (talk) 20:15, 25 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I am verry sorry. Thank you. Tvshowoflife (talk) 01:05, 26 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • @Chinnusaikrish: Commons does not accept images on a "fair use" basis. This is copyrighted material, and will be deleted. The only way we can have copyrighted material is with a free license granted by the copyright holder and allowing both commercial use and derivative works. A newspaper is very unlikely to grant such a license, but if you really think they would, you can approach them; see COM:VRT for what we'd need from them. - Jmabel ! talk 17:21, 24 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

image requirement[edit]

What requirement does an image to get upload and stay on wikicommon or what of image can be uploaded Alessandro Costrufo (talk) 19:32, 25 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Alessandro Costrufo: There is no one requirement for an image to be kept. There are many distinct reasons for an image to be deleted. I don't think I (or anyone) could easily describe the precise intersection of what describes an image that does not violate any of the rules that would be cause for deletion. A short (but inevitably incomplete) list would be:
  1. It is within scope, as described by COM:Scope.
  2. It is not a precise or scaled-down duplicate of an image we already have.
  3. It is either free-licensed with respect to copyright (including commercial reuse and derivative works) or is in the public domain both in its country of creation and in the U.S. There are literally hundreds of ways this criterion can be met or not.
  4. It is not libelous.
  5. It does not violate U.S. obscenity laws.
On these last three criteria, if there is doubt we will almost always delete, based on the precautionary principle.
If you have a specific issue in mind, please raise it because, as I said, the above is inevitably incomplete and because criterion 3 breaks down to so many distinct cases. - Jmabel ! talk 23:55, 25 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Image of Rosette Nebula[edit]

Greetings. My family loves my Electronically Assisted Astronomy images so much they think that the rest of the wikiverse would enjoy them too. I created an account and uploaded my image of the Rosette Nebula on the Rosette Nebula wikipage. I added a descriptive caption as well as describing the specifics. I got a rejection that there could not be confirmed that I actually took the picture. It was an image from my astronomy capture software which I controlled much like photoshop, etc. with no modification over that captured by my camera. It has no metadata, unlike simple digital cameras and phones. Please advise on how I can make the wikibot not reject my work. Thank you. DrBobAZ (talk) 19:49, 27 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I do not see any evidence that you have actually uploaded anything. Ruslik (talk) 20:49, 27 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@DrBobAZ: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg image as a new user. The image you tried to upload is smaller, and you indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a smaller image, it is a copyright violation taken from the web. If you made the image yourself, please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including EXIF metadata. If you did not make the image, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept it, and have the image photographer / designer license it on their official website or social media, or send the image and permission via VRT with a carbon copy to you. If you can't get a compliant license, the image may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 20:53, 27 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I am currently in Somaliland, which is similar to Scotland, Taiwan, or countries that have not yet been recognized. Is it possible for me to have the same constitutional rights as the recognized country?

Linking to a license[edit]

Hi all. What does "linking to a license" look like on a hard copy printout? Does it look like this: https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/deed.en

My intention is to print out copies of an image. The instructions on one of the images say I am free to do so as long as I "give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made." The page says that the file is licensed under the "Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International license." When I click on that, I go to a page with a web address of: https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/deed.en. Do I just include that web address on the printouts of the image?

Sorry if this is an obvious question. I didn't see it addressed in the FAQ. Goodyarn1968 (talk) 18:21, 28 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Goodyarn1968: Hi, Yes, it is specified in section 3(a)(1)(C) of the license. Printing that url for the summary may be sort of ok, but preferably printing the url for the actual license: https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/legalcode. -- Asclepias (talk) 21:00, 28 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thank you! Goodyarn1968 (talk) 22:24, 29 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
A couple of follow up questions, now that I see what else is being required in section 3(a)(1)(C):
(1) Are the images here copyrighted by Creative Commons or by the Artist? Is it on a case by case basis? I don't see a reference in the images I am looking at as to who is the copyright holder.
(2) Is the following sufficient?
[title of image] [link to image]
Artist: [Name of Artist] Copyright [date] by [Copyright holder]
Licensed by Creative Commons under the following Public License: https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/legalcode
Licensor offers the Licensed Material as-is and as-available, and makes no representations or warranties of any kind concerning the Licensed Material, whether express, implied, statutory, or other. Go to the Public License link above for further information.
Thank you. This is my first time doing this, so I don't know what I don't know. Goodyarn1968 (talk) 22:59, 29 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
1: By the owner of the copyright, to whom the text of the license refers as "the Licensor". The owner of the copyright is usually the creator of the image (illustrator or photographer). (In more complex cases, additional copyrights may be involved). Creative Commons does not own a copyright on the image and is not the Licensor. Creative Commons provided the text of the license that the Licensor chose to offer.
2: It looks more than sufficient. There is of course nothing wrong if you want to write even more information than the minimum required by the license. The exact information in each case may depend on what exactly the Licensor indicated (does the Licensor require specific notices or not). You did not provide a concrete example of an image you might use, so we can't get more specific here. There might be suggestions in the FAQ on the Creative Commons website.

Hi, Commons is not for your own promotion, even if it's for charity or whatever. If you want to write about yourself, you must be on Wikipedia, but that's an encyclopedia and writing about yourself is not what Wikipedia is about. If someone or something is well known enough to write about, then others will write about it or you. The same with photo's. If you upload a photo only for yourself, to use it for self-promotion (in any way), it can be deleted. If you have a nice picture of something that Wikimedia can use, it's always welcome, but first think what you wanna do with it. If it's only for yourself, that's not what a wiki is about. Grtz. from the Netherlands, - Richardkiwi (talk) (talk) 12:44, 29 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@𝓕𝓻𝓮𝓮 𝓢𝓽𝓮𝓯𝓪𝓷 𝓟𝓱𝓲𝓵𝓲𝓹: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg photo as a new user. The photo you tried to upload is smaller, and you indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a smaller photo, it is a copyright violation taken from the web. If you took the photo yourself, please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including EXIF metadata. If you did not take the photo, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept it, and have the photographer post permission on their official website or social media or send the photo and permission via VRT with a carbon copy to you. If you can't get a compliant license, the photo may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter. See also COM:SIGN.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 13:11, 29 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Category creation question[edit]

Hi, I created a new category: Category:Mary Dickerson Donahey with a enwiki article Mary Augusta Dickerson that says the writer used two names. How is this handled on the Commons? Did I make a mistake? Thanks, Krok6kola (talk) 16:00, 29 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • @Krok6kola: Usually we match en-wiki, but we could always move the category if necessary (possibly with a redirect). Meanwhile, I've connected it to the en-wiki article by using Wikidata. - Jmabel ! talk 16:47, 29 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

What is the ideal size for a Windows screenshot?[edit]

Hi, if one were to upload a screenshot of Microsoft Windows (which I plan on doing), what would be the ideal size? I'm thinking 320x240, but I'm not sure if its too big or too small. If anyone could tell me what size it should be, that would be great. Cheers. HolyNetworkAdapter (talk) 00:45, 30 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Also, this applies to really any copyrighted image (relating to computers) in general, whether its software or not. HolyNetworkAdapter (talk) 00:46, 30 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@HolyNetworkAdapter: I'm confused. What exactly do you mean to screenshot and upload? If it contains elements for which Microsoft owns copyrights, then we can't accept it here on Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 01:22, 30 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

My user account was duplicated and renamed, want to merge it back.[edit]

During a period of absence, my user account was renamed to User:Rainwarrior~commonswiki, somehow to avoid a conflict with my account which was already User:Rainwarrior? Not sure why this was done, but now I can't edit that user page or make it redirect to my actual account. Also, all of my past contributions and edit history are associated with the commonswiki account. I would like this merged back into my real account please. -- Rainwarrior (talk) 04:59, 30 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • I don't think this can be re-merged, but you can note the relation on both user pages, and stick to your primary account in the future. • You are the copyright owner, not Commons, so there is not much Commons can do. It's possible to sue, but I presume from you writing in French that you are not in Mexico, so that probably wouldn't be easy. The best we can do here is to use {{Published}} on the talk page and be clear that they made illegal use of your photo. - Jmabel ! talk 18:01, 31 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I don't see any uploads under your account here at Wikimedia Commons. If you uploaded the photo directly to a Wikipedia, you will have to go there to find their deletion policy and procedures. The deletion policy for files uploaded here at Commons is at Commons:Deletion policy, and the specific guidelines for when your own uploads may be deleted is at Commons:Courtesy deletions. -M.nelson (talk) 17:11, 1 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Kombi / Bus[edit]

Hi, So this may seem like a daft question but whilst categorising vehicles at Category:Ford Transit Custom (2012) I've come across this image which is titled "Kombi" however I've also come across this image (visually indentical) which is titled "bus"

Do I move the "Kombi" images into Category:Ford Transit Custom (2012) buses or do I move all images from the bus category back to the main category?, Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 21:20, 1 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

"Kombi" is German for station wagon, but Ford themselves call this vehicle "bus", so the bus category is certainly correct. As for whether it is needed: there are a bunch of images and separating them by type of car doesn't seem like a bad idea, so why not. --rimshottalk 21:46, 2 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hey @Rimshot, I'll be honest I hadn't searched this up on Google and being honest I've really known what a Kmobi vehicle was, Anyway many thanks your insight I greatly appreciate your help, Hope you have a healthy and happy new year, Warm Regards, –Davey2010Talk 01:18, 3 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hello @Davey2010 and @Rimshot, Australia use is exemplified by "... Traveling in a fried-out kombi..." lyrics from the song Down Under by Men at Work. Citing a chapter in an edited book?[edit]

Hi. I want to cite an article published in a book. The article has 2 authors and a specific topic, and then it is published in a book which is edited by other people. This is kind of normal in scholarship (and I am a historian), but I can't find a template for it for Wikipedia. Do I use the "Book" template and then do something like "Chapter=" and then the title? Trixi Historian (talk) 21:40, 2 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

This is Wikimedia Commons, not Wikipedia. As we don't generally do articles, just media, we don't do a lot of citing either. In your case, I would go for {{Cite book}} and cite the article as a chapter. You could cite pages x..xx instead, but then you would have no place to put the article's title. You can find an example at English Wikipedia, under examples ("Citing a chapter in a book with different authors for different chapters and an editor"). --rimshottalk 21:56, 2 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks! And sorry i was in the wrong place--shows that I'm still wet behind the ears! I'll do as you say. Trixi Historian (talk) 22:47, 2 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
