Request for vectorization - the Coat of Arms of Moravia[edit]

The moravian eagle, oldest preserved color representation of the coat of arms of the Moravian margrave

Article(s): Moravia, Coat of arms of Moravia.

Request
I'm looking for a person willing to vectorize an image file with the Moravian coat of arms, which is used by many sites: Znak Moravy.jpg. The bitmap format is an obstacle to its wider use on the grounds that the SVG format is better (technically). The existing Moravia.svg file used by other articles as SVG is not suitable from the aesthetic point of view (the shape of the Moravian eagle's tail is not adapted to the shield). It is possible that more people would be willing and able to do it, but in the end at least one willing person could answer the call and do the vectorization.--Pavel Fric (talk) 18:18, 1 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Graphist opinion(s)
@Pavel Fric: do you have an "official" link to the correct version? Looking at this web page, it appears that the existing SVG is more correct. -- (talk) 13:30, 16 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@: See National symbols of the Czech Republic. 1) The linked picture above represents the combination of the Moravian eagle as depicted in the file (picture) with the state (Czech republic) coat of arms. It is copied from it (cut and pasted into an inappropriate shield shape without being adapted). 2) This is based on the annex to the Law on State Symbols, where the coat of arms is described as "Quarterly, first and fourth gules a lion rampant double-queued argent crowned, armed and langued or (for Bohemia), second quarter azure an eagle displayed chequy gules and argent crowned, armed and langued or (for Moravia), third quarter or, an eagle displayed sable crowned of the first, armed and langued gules, on its breast a crescent trefoiled and a crosslet argent (for Silesia)." It is noticeable that in the appendix (picture) to the law the shape of the tail is adapted to the shape of the 2. field (approximately rectangle) in the shield (French shield), whereas in the picture on the linked page the tail of the eagle is not adapted to the shape of the shield (gothic shield). In the English translation, the "red" colour of the dice is listed before the silver, but in the original of the law (Czech language) the silver comes first in the description, followed by the red: the check (chessboard) is silver-red, in this order. Never mind that the appendix to the law shows the check(ering) red-silver. Finally, this can also be seen in other depictions of the Moravian eagle's form or its descriptions (however, the oldest colour depiction from the 13th century is silver-red). But the point is to have depictions that match the text of the law, because images further shape people's ideas of what something should look like.--Pavel Fric (talk) 12:27, 12 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Ukrainian general staff brigade insignia[edit]

Article(s): 101st Brigade for the Protection of the General Staff

Request
Please make a new SVG file for the insignia of the Ukrainian 101st Brigade for the Protection of the General Staff based on the design of the sleeve insignia and the modern cap badge.
The present file leaves much to be desired and is not representative of what the insignia actually looks like, in contrast to most of our comparable files for other brigades. Images of the present-day sleeve insignia in use can be seen here in full colour and low-visibility variants. (Close-up of the patch here; of the real cap-badge here.) A simplified greyscale design appears on their Facebook here. The existing coat of arms image also lacks the brickwork background. GPinkerton (talk) 18:01, 2 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Graphist opinion(s)
@GPinkerton: here you go. (talk) 08:11, 25 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@GPinkerton: Actually, when I look at this flag image, the correct insignia should not include any brick pattern? -- (talk) 17:43, 25 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@: Hi, that looks great! I think a flag from 2014 shouldn't override what we see in the sleeve patches themselves, especially as Ukrainian military heraldry has been revolutionized over the course of the Russo-Ukrainian War. What I was hoping to see was a more simplistic design which would be basically two-dimensional like the sleeve patch shield. Something like File:81 ОАеМБр к.svg or File:1 ОТБр.svg by Inkscape'r. The helmet looks much better now, but I'd like to see a simple shield with flatter rendering of the poleaxes and gauntlet which you have done a great job in vectorizing. A North Korean documentary film (at 30:18) showed the design for the flag of the General Staff of the Korean People's Army. It would be nice if this could be vectorized considering how the same film (at 29:58) shows a list that states under the 13 July 1993 entry that the KPA General Staff flag symbolizes the Korean People's Army. --Migs005 (talk) 03:24, 5 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

2) I can't access your image! Do you have an another link (the provided link is toward mail.google)?
3) without this image, is your requested work related, in the given file in the gallery, to suppress bitmap image embedded in a svg shell?
Have you seen the other versions?
Please note that these two files, Space station size comparison mk.svg (mk) and Space station size comparison zh-hans.svg (zh), are true svg.

@Chinakpradhan:
in reality, Space station size comparison.svg is a true svg, considering the visible part.
But this file (on 2022-07-26 for instance) embeds necessary bitmaps, to be able to build the svg drawing. En rouge (talk) 18:52, 7 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

here is the image uploaded by me on twitter (it's a .tiff version). The image I am asking is an updation of File:Space station size comparison.svg. This current version and all other files you listed are outdated versions. I tried to upload the updation myself but the problem is that image is not converted correctly. So I want it converted and uploaded by someone more better than me. @En rouge Besides if you want the original file only other option is, to email you the file.Chinakpradhan (talk) 15:56, 7 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Chinakpradhan: without any precise description of your request, I made a visual comparison between File:Space station size comparison.svg and your proposed file on twitter. (please note that for a file uploaded to twitter, regardless of the file format, the downloadable image is .png or .jpg... – so it doesn't matter if your initial upload was .tiff or other). For the detected differences, I need dates! Date of the initial space stations dimensions, in the .svg file on Commons; date of the the space stations layout/dimensions in your proposed picture on twitter.
Yours, En rouge (talk) 21:13, 8 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@En rouge, if you need the dates when they were actually addedthen, see that in between 29 April 2021 configuration (uploaded on 4 May 2021) and 3 november 2022 (my version not uploaded as yet) only one module wentian was added on 25 July 2022, but if look into history
ISS:-2 irosas were added on 20 june 2021, nauka (solar panels only) with european robotic arm (not in view) on 29 july 2021, prichal (not in view) on 26 november 2021.
Tiangong (CSS):- new updates and whole design was rotten piece.
see the discussion at User_talk:Sbb1413#Updation. this discussion is increasing the best solution is to provide me a suitable svg application that fully converts png to svg as 4 more final irosas will be added within today and february-march 2022. 1. 1 Ok
  2. 2 Red and green are OK, but the lion would get from me #e1ed03, it would be best to recreate the original contours, but if it is impossible, this drawing can be left, only with the added tongue and tail closer to the body. Swiãtopôłk (talk) 22:31, 11 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Swiãtopôłk:
For #2 at that time the company was anglo-iranian. So, I take elements and colors from Flag of England.svg and Safavid Flag.svg. Orange color is the one for lion on flag for Safavid and Pahlavi dynasties (green and orange colors was taken from the Safavid flag, the lion design was also adapted from this same flag). If you look at the logo Bp logo1961.png, given for (1968-1984), the color is orange... Moreover, your proposed color, #e1ed03, is a

greenish yellow
not really appropriate. To be continued...
#4: This flag seems not to exist. The only pictures I found are only the given logo (i.e. this logo on a white background).
#5: I don't know if this flag exists or not. I've only found this logo on a same green background (often a square design), but no real flag.
If not existing, deletion will be requested for these two last flags. Please, provide a source.
En rouge (talk) 19:19, 12 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@En rouge: I chose this non-standard color because it is present in all images (I think it's because the green underneath shows through) also the dressing of the lion seems to be cohesive [2] [3], This [4] is a link to the official PDF describing the history of the flag, it was one of my sources when I wrote the note, but I haven't opened it in a long time and since Sunday my internet is slower and the PDF won't load. There is #2 but clearly longer than in the photo of the physical flag and I think it's a graphic mistake. If you see any other differences in the PDF compared to what I've provided before, then suggest PDF, it's possible that I rushed the approvals #1. Swiãtopôłk (talk) 21:51, 13 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Swiãtopôłk: I'll talk here about yellow color, in #2 only (but other important info still to go, about #xx later...)
You wrote that your non-standard color is present in all images, but you only link to one image (image zoomed from another, the latter full flag image more appropriate as much in context):
From you link [5] (and [6] which is part of it), you can see that zoomed lion is not the same color as in the entire flag picture. In the full image, the lion is more orang-ish (and even in the zoomed image the green is out of reality, regarding full scope image).
Here are some links to flags I found:
  • [7] first flag on top: almost yellow/orang-ish lion, but others mostly orange or brown
  • [8] (brown)
  • [9] (brown)
  • and, on Commons, Flag of Persia (1964, with fringe).jpg, Qajar Naval Ensign.svg, War Flag of Fath Ali Shah.svg,
And ere are two flags, but fake flying flags I suppose, supposedly based on flags from Commons:
I still maintain, as an argument, that in Bp logo1961.png, color yellow in fact is... orange
(and in your sample pdf file, red seems to be inappropriate for #1; this can induce suspicion about color fidelity).
Yours, En rouge (talk) 02:32, 14 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
PS: why don't you provide all the material you have, for the graphists to have more information?
From one video I found in BP web site, for #2 I'll modify orange to a yellow one. To be continued.

For clarity, it could be helpful to have a separate icon "RACK" for the later, similar to the above, but without the cable. I could vectorize those images, but I have a couple questions:
  1. What's their license? The only info I found was "The City Arms must not be reproduced without the permission of Glasgow City Council." in the second link.
  2. Which colors are preferable? The grey and brown of the first link or the blue and yellow of the second link?
TilmannR (talk) 17:04, 23 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@TilmannR: Thanks for pointing that out, and sorry about that. Honestly, I'm rather unsure about exactly what the Arms' license is. Perhaps, if a file were to be created, it should follow the lead of the first link? As in that it gives a close enough representation of the Arms without being an exact replica of the official version (as I'm sure an exact replica would be forbidden by the second link)? Or would you think otherwise? Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 16:34, 24 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I'm done vectorizing a slightly larger version from https://www.glasgow.gov.uk/CHttpHandler.ashx?id=16962&p=0 . (Without gradients or fancy shading, just flat colors.)
About the licensing: The lines in these images are nearly identical. I'm pretty sure that we're dealing with derivative works of the official version. Copying it makes our version also a derivative work, even if the colors are a bit different.
About the colors: In the "Flag of Glasgow" section from November GPinkerton seemed to know what the proper colors are. TilmannR (talk) 19:02, 25 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I just found an even larger version at https://www.glasgow.gov.uk/CHttpHandler.ashx?id=38711&p=0 and it says "The Coat of Arms must not be reproduced without the permission of the Lord Lyon’s office.", which is slightly different than "permission of Glasgow City Council", but still not great. TilmannR (talk) 19:06, 25 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@TilmannR: The term "proper" has a specific meaning indicating that the object concerned is the colour it would be in nature: in fishes' case, the "proper" colour is one which best represents the brown trout (Salmo trutta) found in the Clyde river. The existing fish are too grey and colourless for this species. The cock robin (Erithacus rubecula) should be also be "proper", with red and brown plumage in the natural places. The sainted bishop should be depicted according to the usages of heraldry: wearing the episcopal robes and mitre and not the plain white of the present SVG rendering. Heraldry is not copyrighted as such and it's perfectly legitimate to have coats of arms on Commons. Even an exact copy of an existing heraldic design of sufficient age is presumably OK if the image was drawn a suitable number of decades in the past. This is true of all heraldry, not just that of Scotland or Glasgow. I do not believe that the simple illustration of arms infringes on the ancient laws regulated by the Court of the Lord Lyon; it's passing off someone or something else's arms as your own that is illegal. GPinkerton (talk) 19:26, 25 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
"The current version of the coat of arms dates from April 1996", so its age is insufficient for us to assume public domain. The phrase "must not be reproduced without the permission of" seems to be a generic copyright notice. E.g. they wrote "The Glasgow Mark must not be reproduced without the permission of Glasgow City Council." next to their logo. I know that some countries exclude certain things from copyright (e.g. {{PD-RU-exempt}} excludes "symbols and signs of municipal formations" in Russia). I just don't know whether that's true for cities' coats of arms in Scotland. TilmannR (talk) 21:07, 25 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@TilmannR: The current arms were granted in 1996, and the specific artistic design that accompanied the grant of arms was painted at the same time, but although this means that that particular painting is copyrighted, the actual arms themselves are simply a verbal blazon that may be rendered artistically anyhow. The current arms differ from the pre-1996 version (granted in 1975 and earlier versions granted or assumed in earlier centuries) only in the type of crown; the rest of the arms is identical to the arms used for centuries. The addition, substitution, or substraction of a generic crown does not affect copyright status; the elements of the blazon (crowns, bird, tree, fish, bell, bishop) are all basic heraldic elements which are copyrightable neither in combination nor separately. The image on Commons should not be a direct copy of any existing rendition of the design, but rather a de novo graphic version of the official blazon. (This is true of basically all heraldry on Commons.) The blazon, I should add, actually calls for salmon (S. salar) rather than the brown trout I mentioned earlier. @GPinkerton: Thank you for clarifying. Then I won't upload my vectorization of that particular painting. Unfortunately I'm not very good at drawing things from scratch. I could vectorize Glasgow Coat of Arms.png and replace the helmet with UK Mural Crown (Common).svg.
Another question about the colours: Is the bell supposed to be grey or gold? It's grey in Glasgow-CoA.svg and Glasgow Coat of Arms.png, but gold in Glasgow Coat of Arms - geograph.org.uk - 1181679.jpg and on Glasgow's website for example. TilmannR (talk) 20:57, 26 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@TilmannR: It shouldn't be necessary to vectorize a whole new image; the existing SVG would be OK with a few adjustments of colour and shape. As for the bell, I believe the actual original bell it represents no longer exists, but typically, bells are cast in bronze or brass: I never heard of a gold or silver one. It too is supposed to be "proper", so any kind of coppery colour would fit. As for the shape of the bell, the blazon calls for an "ancient handbell", which should mean the cowbell-shaped bells of the early mediaeval Celtic Christians, described here, with a surviving Scottish example here in the National Museum of Scotland. Apparently, these bells were wrought from iron and then brazed (rather than cast), but that should make no difference to the external appearance. It's visible in that shape here, which I think is a copy of the 1996 grant. Since we're going to all this trouble, it might be worth making a file with the pre-1996 arms as well (same but with helmet rather than mural crown). @GPinkerton and Snow Lion Fenian: ✓ Done. Thank you for your patience. Of course vectorizing a whole new image wasn't necessary, but it's relaxing and educational, which is ultimately what I'm here for. Face-smile.svg TilmannR (talk) 12:52, 30 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@TilmannR: Thank you profusely for doing those, fantastic work! Face-smile.svg And while we're still here, I can't help but ask if you'd also be willing to create an SVG file of the "Flag of Glasgow", which is a banner of the current arms, as seen here? Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 18:37, 30 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Snow Lion Fenian: ✓ Done. TilmannR (talk) 09:05, 31 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@TilmannR: That's brilliant, and thanks again for all your hard work here. Face-smile.svg Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 10:06, 31 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

for the sake of completeness, could I ask @TilmannR: for a banner in the 5:4 ratio (recommended by a sometime Lord Lyon for the heraldic banner) and also a file with just the plain arms on a shield without elaboration. GPinkerton (talk) 19:59, 2 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Pretty sure this is the right place - an SVG logo was requested for the above photo. I found an SVG logo from the official website (top left) but the text is white and not black. Could anyone invert the colors from white to black if possible? --Harobouri (talk) 02:07, 25 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Vectorize the heraldic badge of the Football Association[edit]

Article(s): en:Coat of arms of the Football Association, etc.

Request
Please vectorize the heraldic badge of the Football Association, blazoned:

A representation of the Football Association Cup encircled by a chaplet of olive leaves proper

The badge is visible beneath the coat of arms on plate № 3a of Phillips, David Llewelyn (Spring 2015). "Badges and 'Crests': The Twentieth-century Relationship Between Football and Heraldry". The Coat of Arms, the Journal of the Heraldry Society XI part 1 (229): 35–50. The trophy should of course closely resemble the actual FA cup as much as possible in outline shape. Illustration needs cleanup to look more presentable[edit]

Article(s): en:Paul Martin (illustrator) - reachable via a link in reference 56.

Hello. I am the original uploader of this item. I once owned the original magazine, but it was in a binder. Hence, the reason the page is curled downward, along the right edge. I don't want major alternations made that would necessitate the creating of a new file name. I was just hoping this one could look more presentable. For instance, perhaps correcting the darkened shades along bottom and edge of right side. I don't know if anything could be done to give the page better focus, darken the image a tiny spec, or straighten out a couple or so slanted words. Martin drew three illustrations for the "Monitor Top" refrigerator. This is one of them. In closing: I'd appreciate just some touch-ups to improve the overall quality, without having to create a new file name. That mostly means just lightening those darkened shadow areas, so that everything blends in better. Thanks. --JimPercy (talk) 15:02, 30 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Flags of Peterborough Cathedral and Southwark Cathedral[edit]

Article(s): Peterborough Cathedral, Southwark Cathedral, List of English flags and List of United Kingdom flags.

Request
Will someone please create SVG files for the flag of Peterborough Cathedral (as seen here, and based on the arms here) and the flag of Southwark Cathedral (as seen here and here, and based on the arms here). Thanks. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 17:07, 2 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Pictogram voting comment.svg Comment @Snow Lion Fenian: I think these are not the flags of the cathedral as such, but banners of arms of the bishops themselves. Presumably, they fly to indicate the prelate is there. The cathedral (or its corporation or chapter or whatever) ought to fly the diocesan flag intended for all churches in that bishop's territory: the English cross with the episcopal arms inescutcheoned in the canton. Since copies of the diocesan flags exist already, it might be better to request a full complement of episcopal banners of arms, rather than focusing on individual cathedral churches. GPinkerton (talk) 19:53, 2 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@GPinkerton: Well, I'm not sure these are supposed to be episcopal banners of arms, considering that neither of the arms/flags in the links match the look of the actual COAs of the Diocese of Peterborough and the Diocese of Southwark. Or am I interpreting your response wrongly? Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 22:20, 2 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Snow Lion Fenian: I didn't make clear the difference between the arms of the diocese and the arms of the incumbent bishop (or of some significant predecessor). Could the arms in the flag belong to the bishop personally rather than to the see? How are we identifying the flags with the cathedrals as such? GPinkerton (talk) 22:46, 2 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@GPinkerton: Well, regarding Southwark Cathedral, this post here (from the Cathedral's FB page) does confirm the arms in the previous link as those of Southwark Cathedral itself. Though I'll try and get back to you regarding Peterborough Cathedral at some point. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 02:36, 3 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Pictogram-voting question.svg Question this flag looks like an old banner of arms, but this article suggests the flag was designed by Graham Bartram (@GrahamPadruig: ). Is there any more information available? GPinkerton (talk) 21:11, 2 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@GPinkerton: Well, from what I've gathered, the cross-impaling-the-dragon's-head is indeed part of the arms attributed to Saint Margaret of Antioch (if you go on this page here, and scroll down to the "Arms Associated With Saints" section, and then on to the part about "St Margaret of Antioch", you'll see what I mean), but not the crowned portcullis. Which leads me to believe that it was indeed Graham Bartram who designed the modern flag of the COSM, and that it was his decision to add the crowned portcullis onto what is otherwise (as you said) a banner of arms.
