Lately, we’ve been torn between wanting to support local restaurants and practicing social distancing. Due to a concerning rise in COVID-19 cases, the Hong Kong government has implemented new laws that prohibit restaurants from seating groups of more than four people. Restaurants must also space their tables at least 1.5 metres apart. For many of Hong Kong’s notoriously small restaurants, this poses a challenge and will seriously affect their operations.

We’ve already reported on how food delivery is keeping many restaurants afloat during this time. Delivery is a fantastic option for restaurants that have the manpower to take on the task. While there are many restaurants that have always offered delivery and partnered with food-delivery companies, for other restaurants, this is brand new. It can be challenging for smaller spots to suddenly adjust to this new world of at-home dining.

Brut! & Pondi

Pondi Hong KongBeloved Sai Ying Pun eateries Brut! and Pondi are up for the challenge. Camille Glass, co-founder of both restaurants, stated, “We’ve been tasked with making a choice between keeping our businesses afloat and our staff employed over the health and safety of the general public. It’s been hard, but we’re making it work.”

Both spots are now offering lunch and dinner takeaway menus from Tuesday to Sunday. Their small teams are also hand-delivering as much food as possible around the neighbourhood and “intend on putting a certain percentage of proceeds towards aiding the service industry folk who have lost their jobs or their businesses”.

LucAle

LucAle Hong Kong

LucAle, an authentic Italian restaurant that recently opened in Sai Ying Pun, has been quick to offer to-go options, with a takeaway menu to enjoy in the comfort of your own home. Aside from sharing plates like burrata with 24-month-aged Parma ham and decadent pastas and mains, they’re also offering alcohol to go, with beer (from $55/bottle) and wine (from $180/bottle) available.

Morton’s The Steakhouse

Morton’s The Steakhouse Hong

If you’re a steak lover, Morton’s has great takeaway options. The Table for Two package ($658) includes two filet mignons for cooking at home (with instructions for newbies), a duo of lobster tails, sides such as grilled jumbo asparagus, mashed potato and (our pick for comfort eating) bacon and onion mac ‘n’ cheese, now available in a ready-to-bake format, and double chocolate mousse for dessert. For families and groups, check out the two Ultimate Grill packages ($1,388 and $2,588). All Morton’s dine-out options come with the steakhouse’s signature steak seasoning mix, homemade au jus and a house salad.

Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong

Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong

Another meaty option for five-star dining at home is the debut of the Mandarin Oriental’s roast menu for takeaway or delivery. The menu features the hotel’s signature roast meats, sides and desserts. So perhaps an order of US Prime tenderloin beef Wellington, buttered carrots, cauliflower gratin and the legendary 1963 Mandarin cheesecake? Wine, beer and champagne selected for pairing by the hotel’s sommelier are also up for grabs. Available daily from 6–9pm, a minimum order of one roast item is required and must be placed at least 24 hours in advance. Delivery on HK Island is free (apart from Southern District) or pick up at The Mandarin Cake Shop.

The hotel also offers takeaway and delivery of fine-dining Cantonese dishes from Man Wah and British pub classics (from curries, to bangers and mash, to shepherd’s pie) from The Chinnnery, with luxury cocktails curated by hotel mixologist Slamet Haryadi available to go.
