Prohibition is an American-style steakhouse tucked away in a quiet wing of the new Ocean Park Marriott, one of the most family-friendly hotels in Hong Kong, located right beside Ocean Park. The charming restaurant is cosy and nostalgic, with an interior filled with plush red velvet curtains, intimate lighting and the incorporation of brick, leather and copper mixed with vintage dark wooden furnishings.
Participating in the Hong Kong Tourism Board’s Great November Feast, Prohibition created a whisky-pairing menu featuring its speciality, steak.
For starters, we had a choice of a lightly dressed Caesar salad with toasted croutons and bacon bits or a crispy lump crab cake with yuzu and cod roe tartar sauce. Both were classic choices that were just enough to whet the palate before the steak made an appearance.
Here’s the fun part – a trio of strip loin hot off the grill, cooked to a perfect medium rare. Starting from the left, a chewy Argentinian grass-fed steak served with a mild and fruity Akashi blended whisky, followed by a USDA Prime skirt with crisp fat paired with a smooth and creamy Koval organic bourbon single-barrel whisky. The best piece was saved for last – the tender and seriously succulent Australian M7 Wagyu matched with a glass of whisky from The Lost Distillery.
The grilling was impeccable, and eaten alone, most of the steaks did not need any condiments, though the French mustard did enhance the mellow flavour of the USDA Prime. Eaten with creamy aged Cheddar mashed potatoes and rustic roasted vegetables, the comforting sides made for a robust, treat-yourself dinner.
For dessert, a sweet, fairy-tale-like spread called The Forest was individually presented, consisting of pistachio cake, pistachio parfait, yoghurt ice cream covered in milk chocolate, apricot candy and meringue. Filled with textures and flavours that were just as enchanting as the presentation, this creative dessert was impressively tasty.
Verdict
While the restaurant gives off an adults-only vibe, Prohibition still remains super family friendly. This underestimated eatery is a gem remaining true to its old-school interior and variety of premium steaks on offer. Although the Great November Feast whisky-pairing menu has concluded, Prohibition’s à-la-carte menu is diverse and reasonably priced.
