Brunching might just be our national pastime, and there are always new brunch offerings being unveiled around town. To help you out, we’ve narrowed down our picks for the top places for brunching as the weather cools down.

Ask for Alonzo

Alonzo’s Uncle Bruno is in town, whipping up a family-style Italian brunch that’s sure to make everyone happy. Uncle Bruno’s Brunch at Ask for Alonzo is a four-course affair, starting off with a selection of sharing starters (Italian cold cuts, meatballs, fried calamari and Breakfast in Tuscany – your choice of egg preparation atop toasted bread with a puttanesca mix and Parma ham). Then it’s pasta time (spaghetti with clams, breakfast carbonara topped with a fried egg, tomato and basil spaghetti or linguine with truffle and mushroom), followed by a main course (red snapper, pork Milanese or pan-roasted primavera salad) and dessert (white chocolate panna cotta, toasted brioche with mascarpone and wild berry compote or Greek yoghurt with granola, honey and raspberries). Mamma mia!

Bayfare Social

Tapas are ideal dishes for a laid-back group brunch, and Bayfare Social at Rosewood Hong Kong has a new feast of Spanish-focused sharing dishes that we’re keen to sample with friends. Chef Jorge Vera Gutiérrez’s brunch starts with a bang with a seafood platter (Boston lobster, oysters, tiger prawns) on ice and scallop tiradito, then moves on to several classic tapas plates (Ibérico ham croquettes, padrón peppers, cider-braised chorizo), two mains (roasted suckling pig and seafood paella) and dessert of churros or tart of the day. Say “si” to a free-flow package add-on, and you’ll be ready for a siesta post-brunch.

Where: 5/F, Rosewood Hong Kong, Victoria Dockside, 18 Salisbury Road, TST

When: Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays (12–3pm)

How much: HK$598/person; +HK$298 for free-flow featuring cava, sherry cocktails, sangria, house red and white wine and Estrella Damm beer ; +HK$498 for free-flow to include all of the above plus Duval-Leroy champagne, signature cocktails and premium wine

HENRY

Also at Rosewood Hong Kong, HENRY is the hotel’s refined smokehouse, and Chef de Cuisine Mario Tolentino is putting on a down-home brunch dubbed The Weekend Feast to make BBQ fans proud. A selection of market oysters, bluefin tuna, tiger prawns, wedge salad, artichoke soup and roasted bone marrow to share start off this gut-busting brunch, followed by a choice of main (we’d pay the supplement and go for either the BBQ plate piled high with 44 Farms beef brisket, Berkwood Farms baby-back ribs and beer-can chicken, the charbroiled seafood platter or one of the top-quality steak cuts). Comforting sides such as Parker House rolls, burnt ends chilli and black truffle macaroni gratin can be ordered à la carte if you really want to go the whole hog, while dessert is part of the deal, with a choice of pineapple upside-down cake or almond panna cotta.

Highlights of the massive menu are extensive, from traditional har gow and siu mai to more innovative fried cheesy taro dumplings with curried Wagyu beef and prawn toast x okonomiyaki on the dim sum section of the menu. Then there’s a selection of snacks (shredded mushroom salad with cold noodles, salt-and-pepper squid, smashed cucumber and radish, Chongqing chicken wings and salt-and-pepper tofu), wok-fried veg dishes, egg fried rice, prawn-roe stirred noodles, Kurobuta pork char siu and three desserts (tofu sorbet with longan granita, pandan milk bread French toast and Ho Lee Fook’s famous Mahjong Tiles – adorable mini cakes shaped like these popular Chinese game tiles). This Spanish stalwart has just one year to go before it celebrates an amazing quarter-century on the HK dining scene, and with that in mind, the Olé team have released a special 24th anniversary Spanish weekend brunch that showcases a variety of authentic Spanish sharing dishes. The six traditional tapas include sizzling garlic prawns, grilled Spanish octopus, baked Basque spider crab, deep-fried padrón peppers, Ibérico ham with tomato bread and herb-roasted Ibérico pork presa, while there’s a choice of one of seven Spanish main courses (we’re suckers, literally, for the roasted suckling pig). For dessert, choose from one of four classic Spanish sweets such as churros with hot chocolate or leche frita (fried milk) with a toffee reduction. If you’re in the mood for a splurge, we recommend upgrading your main to Executive Chef Jesus Pascual’s newly created red prawn paella topped with sea urchin aioli.

We urge you to add on the optional wine pairing to make your Gallic Sunday complete.
