The Marco Polo German Bierfest has yet to make a return to Hong Kong since 2018 (first it was the protests, then it was the pandemic), but there are still plenty of fun Oktoberfest events on this year that involve lots of good eating and drinking, German style. These include two brand-new beer festivals that are being organised on a pretty grand scale.
Here are our top picks for celebrating Oktoberfest in the 852 (while imagining you’ve been transported to a beer tent in Bavaria) – Ein Prosit der Gemütlichkeit!
BaseHall
BaseHall, our favourite food hall in the 852, is hosting two Oktoberfest events this year for all us busy Hong Kongers, transforming into a traditional Bavarian beer tent with beer, German-inspired dishes and classic Oktoberfest games – including the iconic stein-holding competition. Each of BaseHall’s eight food vendors has created a special dish in honour of the occasion, and Young Master will be brewing their exclusive Young Master Festbier on the nights.

Central Market x Nina Hospitality Oktoberfest 2022
There’s loads of Oktoberfest fun in store in this partnership between Central Market and Nina Hospitality, with the ground floor of the market space transforming into a Bavarian Biergarten for two weeks in October. Expect beer tastings aplenty, exclusive limited-time German delicacies by the market’s vendors, classic beer games (with prizes!) and live band performances. Perfect for the whole family!

GRAIN
This authentic celebration of Bavarian beer culture at home-grown craft brewery Gweilo’s gastropub GRAIN comes complete with a sharing menu featuring a spread of German-inspired starters (think pretzels with beer cheese, sauerkraut croquettes and potato pancakes topped with cod roe and smoked salmon), a roast main of beer-brined and smoked ham and a house-made Currywurst platter – plus a stein of Vienna Lager or glass of bubbly to wash it all down. To take it up a notch, guests can opt to add on the free-flow package, which includes unlimited Prosecco, house red and white wine and a selection of special Oktoberfest beer. Highlights on the brewski side are the Vienna Lager and King in Yellow (Helles Lager) by H.K. Lovecraft and the brewed-on-site Gweilo Lager. Live entertainment, games and prizes are in store too.

Heimat
Chef Peter Find’s fine-dining German restaurant Heimat is celebrating its first Oktoberfest season in Hong Kong with a refined five-course menu of German classics served alongside authentic apple cider and a selection of German beer. The feast begins with Heimat Brotzeit – the ultimate charcuterie board of freshly made soft pretzels, rye sourdough, Landjäger sausage, Black Forest ham and speck and Allgäuer and Limburger cheese – before moving on to dishes of Kohlrouladen (cabbage rolls filled with pork), Schinken im Brotteig (smoked pork shoulder baked in rye sourdough) and Schlachtplatte (a traditional sausage platter that includes blood and liver sausages, Nürnberger and Munich white sausages and boiled bacon with sauerkraut). The menu is capped off with Kaiserschmarren, a dessert of fluffy caramelised pancakes served with homemade apple compote.

Hong Kong Oktoberfest 2022
Oktoberfest comes to Water World! This exciting new outdoor festival features a huge beer tent serving a range of German and imported beers as well as authentic Bavarian dishes, but there’s more than just good food and drink on the cards at this 30,000-square-foot venue. Entertainment includes contests of stein holding and bratwurst/pretzel eating, games like giant Jenga and cornhole, a Mr & Mrs Oktoberfest competition for those with the best Oktoberfest style – hosted by MC Fraulein (legendary panto artist Terry Hart) – and a live oompah band. Dust off your dirndl and lederhosen, folks!

It’s Docktoberfest time over at Kerry Hotel, held at the luxury hotel’s industrial-inspired food hall, Dockyard. Take your pick from a beer combo set that includes two glasses of beer and a German dish (perhaps pork schnitzel or Currywurst), a three-hour free-flow package and, on Fridays and Saturdays, a stein-holding competition and lucky draw.

The Murray, Hong Kong
The Murray’s annual Oktoberfest experience is possibly the most transportive, with the five-star hotel’s Cotton Tree Terrace metamorphosing into an al-fresco Biergarten on selected nights this autumn. Its partner in crime this year is local brewery Gweilo, which is offering a range of its craft beer on tap. There’s also The Murray Oktoberfest Lager created just for the Garten-Oktoberfest. Guests can opt for a one-litre stein of their favourite brew or sample them all in smaller portions. On the food side of the spectrum, indulge in the likes of authentic German delicacies such as roasted pork knuckle, Bavarian Weisswurst and apple strudel.

Porkcentric
This Central European restaurant with two native Poles at the helm is throwing its own German-style dance party – Ich Bin Ein Berliner – to coincide with Oktoberfest. Porkcentric’s one-night-only event includes free-flow drinks and canapés, to the tune of electro minimal deep house beats.

Tong Chong Street Market x KIN Food Halls Beer Festival 2022
Taikoo Place neighbours Tong Chong Street Market and KIN Food Halls have teamed up to spotlight 14 of the city’s most-loved local craft brewers at this festival in partnership with the Craft Beer Association of Hong Kong. Each brewery’s chosen anchor beers have been specifically paired with one of KIN’s signature dishes. Highlights of the creative beer and food pairings include Blaze Beer Club’s Big Three XPA matched with OBP’s Korean fried chicken, Deadman Brewery’s Dirty Pale Ale paired with the Penang Teochew char kway teow by Axian’s Selection and Yardley Brothers’ Thai Chilli Getaway with EASY! buddy’s Thai-style mixed skewers.
