What makes people start a business? There are likely many answers, but too much laundry is probably not the first answer that springs to mind. This isn’t the only reason new sustainable chef-wear brand Cavalry Wear was launched, but it was indeed a mountain of laundry that got them questioning: how is chef wear made and is there a better alternative?
Dynamic husband-and-wife duo James and Diana Harrison are at the helm of Cavalry Wear. Diana is a sustainability adviser, and her strategic thininking and systems-based approach help companies to align their visions with sustainable goals. James is an executive chef with over 20 years of experience, with nine years spent living here in Hong Kong working for a leading restaurant group.
James and Diana set out on a mission to provide the hospitality industry with better apparel choices – using natural materials while staying light and comfortable and enduring hot kitchens and long hours.
To James and Diana, “cavalry” means family. Their cavalry is the service crews, the people who make Hong Kong’s F&B and hospitality industries the best and most exciting in the world. To change industry mindset and habits, they need soldiers. Hong Kong is home to over 15,000 restaurants, so there are plenty of soldiers to enlist to help them to achieve this.
The range of Cavalry Wear products – jackets, aprons, T-shirts, shorts and bandanas – favours natural materials, including hemp, organic cotton and linen, that are safer on the skin and have less impact on the planet. Partnering with businesses that care about their people and materials is very important to James and Diana, and each of the suppliers has been vetted to ensure every product is manufactured safely, lovingly and responsibly.
For instance, the Cavalry jackets, aprons and T-shirts are made in the mountain city of Tai’an, China. Their partner employs 164 people and specialises in the production of hemp and organic fabric clothing. Importantly, the factory prides itself on its certified GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) and OCS (Organic Content Standard) fabrics. Their products also meet Standard 100 by OEKO-TEX, one of the world’s best-known labels for textiles that have been tested for harmful substances, promising customer confidence and product safety.
Currently, Cavalry Wear offers wholesale pricing for bulk orders, with an entry-level order of 10 pieces. You can also customise your order with special embroidery and tailored sizing. Get 10% of your first order when you sign up to receive Cavalry Wear’s newsletter.
