There are new Hong Kong beers coming out every week. It’s impossible to keep up, but we are somewhat obsessed. Send us deets about the HK beer world.

This article was originally published in early November and is updated as new events are announced.

December beer news in brief

There’s a new beer news source! If you’re not on the craft beer WhatsApp group started by the Craftissimo crew, ask around and get added. Be warned though – it’s busy. We will continue to update events here for posterity.

The Cathay Pacific IWSC 2021 Hong Kong winners have been announced, and Young Master cleaned up with six trophies and 22 medals. DEADMAN Brewery picked up 13 medals, proving that they are consistent across the range, and Carbon Brews received two trophies and seven medals.

Carbon Brews taproom in SOHO

RELATED: Carbon Brews Central is open! Check it out here.

A Carbon Brews taproom is on its way! The branded boarding was spotted on Wyndham Street by Hong Kong’s unofficial beer ambassador, opposite LKF Tower. Details will be incoming, but it’s not likely to be open this year.

We love to support local and recently became aware of Craftlah, a beer supplier that aims to get you local craft beers delivered cold on the same day that you order them. Get your order in by 2pm and you can be enjoying a quarantine mixed case that night (without the quarantine, hopefully). Use promo code Foodie15 for 15% off and enjoy free delivery for spends over $600.

Taps we need to visit

It’s great to see lots of places now own their taps, which means they can freestyle their beer choices at will and are not restricted to only serving one brand.

Here is our shortlist of interesting beer places we want to visit:

  • The Blackstar – Hangry Donut and Cereusly on tap in Sheung Wan! Free-flow for $228 from 6pm
  • Craft Logic – opened recently near PMQ on Wah In Fong East, taps incoming
  • Graceland – Zhang Men’s neighbour in Mongkok, for Kona Longboard Island Lager on tap and Southern soul food
  • HANDS – opened in 2019 in Prince Edward (not really new), they specialise in craft beer + magic!
  • Hops 37 – behind Times Square at 37 Yiu Wa Street, specialising in craft beer and shisha
  • Yum Kwun – next to the Blue House in Wanchai, offering great Thai sets and 10 taps

Beer collaborations

Two very different collabs snuck up on us. Blue Bottle Coffee has teamed up with H.K. Lovecraft to offer a coffee lager using the signature Bella Donovan coffee blend. Promising a perfect balance between raspberry, chocolate and the molasses taste of coffee with the clean crispness of lager, we are looking forward to trying it.

Bloody Women is the HK chapter of the worldwide non-profit organisation Pink Boots Society, and this new brand will be brewing at Young Master Brewery using a pale ale recipe by master brewer Jess Hanson. Inviting us to consider the can as well as the contents, Bloody Women shares stories of real-life domestic abuse and aims to bring the conversation out of the shadows. Controversial? Yes. But it shouldn’t be, and that’s the point.

UPDATE: the campaign has been described as “misguided, unethical and dangerous” by a HKU associate law professor and is copping flak at HKFP. We are uncomfortable with the design on the cans, but if sharing their stories in this manner empowers victims of domestic abuse, surely that is more important? The ultimate test, however, will be whether it will sell, and we think it’s going to be too divisive to be commercially successful.

Events, tap takeovers & beer launches

As events are announced, we will add them here... check back often!

Multi-venue Young Master beer launch (11 November)

Young Master is releasing four anniversary beers at their taprooms and offering them on a beer platter (4 x 200ml) for $222 for just one day. The new beers are:

  • 八歲 8 Shui Stout Cocktail – barrel-aged imperial stout with whisky and cherry
  • 赤兔馬 Red Hare – raspberry and coffee sour
  • 颯露紫 Purple Mare – blueberry and coffee sour
  • 壹仟 Yat Cheen – triple IPA

The infamous Yat Cheen first came about when the brewery received a heap of free hops from their supplier, and they used them all in one batch of IPA. The result was a wicked, bitter 10%-ABV triple IPA that was named the best beer in Hong Kong in 2017. There will be a free glass of it for YMFAM members (free to join). Find the Facebook event here.

November beer news in brief

UPDATE: Cathay IWSC 2021 Hong Kong winners!

The DEADMAN Brewery Oktoberfest 2021

First, a huge shout-out to DEADMAN Brewery, which hosted the most amazing, inclusive craft beer festival via an Oktoberfest + Halloween crossover. It was incredible to sample so many fresh HK brews, including some great home brews. There were no bad beers! Over the three sessions, there were:

Most of the brewers were on hand at the DEADMAN Brewery playground, and it was tremendous fun. Hot tip: we learned that there is always a delicious, traditional Gose in the tank that is reserved for DEADMAN Brewery tours.

Congratulations to those who won medals and were recognised at the Asia Beer Championship 2021. HK brewers can be proud of what they have achieved in difficult circumstances. Consider trying a hEROES Kupzzy In Time Hazy DIPA if you haven’t already; it’s been named the Champion IPA of Asia. Use promo code 10forfoodie to get 10% off on the hEROES website.

Young Master is celebrating their eighth anniversary and will hold at least 10 events this month. Don’t forget that Young Master has weekly specials for their YMFAM to help to gather those points for “red pants” status. Sign up for free and get a free beer for your trouble.

Sneaking up on us recently is a newly created Carbon Brews Japan Instagram account – they are opening a Carbon Brews taproom in Tokyo early next year!

We were excited to find out that the new Hong Kong Cannery is not just RTDs; they have their own beer (Intothestorm00 Hazy Session IPA – some of you might have tried it at the DEADMAN Oktoberfest), but unfortunately, their beer plans are limited going forward. Regardless, you must watch this rather exciting short video on their canning line.
